Chavez urges alliance to defend Latin America

8:15AM Tuesday January 29, 2008

President Hugo Chavez yesterday urged Venezuela's allies to form an "anti-imperialist" military alliance to defend Latin America from possible attacks by the United States.

Warning that Washington poses a threat to regional security, Chavez called on Nicaragua, Bolivia and communist-led Cuba to "put together a common defence strategy and create our armed force" - a military coalition united against US dominance in the region.

Chavez gives U.S. Firm US$190M order

Reuters Published: Thursday, January 03, 2008

Cameron International Corp., the third-largest U.S. maker of oilfield equipment, said yesterday it had a contract to provide more than US$190-million in subsea equipment and services to Venezuela's state oil company. The contract includes production systems and services for two offshore fields, Dragon and Patao, that Petroleos de Venezuela SA is developing as part of its Mariscal Sucre gas project, Houston-based Cameron said. Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela, plans to make the US$2.5-billion project Latin America's largest natural-gas industrial centre, eventually including petrochemicals and liquefied-gas plants. Mariscal Sucre is designed to help diversify the energy industry of Venezuela, the world's sixth-largest oil exporter. Global demand for subsea production systems is booming as drilling moves further offshore. Installations of so-called trees -- valves and chokes atop a well that control production -- will rise to an estimated 669 this year from 286 in 2006.
Mr. Chavez's government, which last year seized control of oil assets from Houston-based ConocoPhillips and other foreign producers, may have had little choice other than contracting with a U.S. company for the Mariscal Sucre equipment, an analyst said.
