Today is Valentines Day and it is much celebrated here (for a communist country there is far too much much capitalist or hallmark celebrations here) This morning on my way to the office there were quite a few floral sale stands on the streets and smiling girls holding balloons and flowers all around, and not to be missed, a lot of men hitting on women. If you are a girl walking down the street in Venezuela, chances are that you will be hit on. Some days some men flirt by winking or smiling and even saying hello or good afternoon. But there are some days when some men are extremely rude and yell out some obscene sentence that makes anyone squirm. I sit here and wonder about a lot of things and cultural differences people have, I have many times wished I was quick enough to reply back not with something obscene or rude but with something witty. So far, nothing, I have not been able to figure out who will be the next ass....e that says anything to me.
In any case, acknowledgment of a sincere compliment with a smile and an oblivious blank stare seem to work out so far, here and in a lot of places around the world, whether you do or do not celebrate the day, have a happy one!
